Employment Opportunities

We’re hiring! Grass Cattle Company is looking for capable, hardworking people to join our mission-driven team. We currently have several open positions—including a full-time, year-round Farm Manager, a seasonal Grazing Season Assistant Farm Manager (May–October), and a part-time Farmers Market Manager—but more than anything, we’re looking for the right people who are ready to show up, get their hands dirty, and help us grow. If you’re passionate about good food, sustainable farming, and working with a small team that’s all in, we want to hear from you. For the right candidate, we’re happy to mix and match responsibilities or shape a hybrid role that plays to your strengths—whether that’s livestock, poultry, events, farmers markets, infrastructure, e-commerce, marketing, or customer experience. If you’re ready to work hard, learn a ton, and be part of something real, let’s talk.

How to Apply:

Shoot us a message with a little about you, your resume, any references you have, your experience (or lack thereof — we’re open), and what you’re hoping to get out of the season or your time here. We’ll set up a visit to the farm and go from there.

Farm Manager (Year-Round)

Grass Cattle Company is seeking a dedicated and experienced Farm Manager to lead day-to-day operations of our pasture-based meat enterprise. This is a salaried, full-time position based in Charlotte & Hinesburg Vermont. There are trailer and tiny home hook ups on the farm in Charlotte, for those looking to live on the farm. However at this time you would need to provide your own tiny home, camper, or trailer.

You’ll work closely with owner Steve to manage cattle. Your primary responsibilities will be daily chores, poultry, on-farm stores, farmers markets, and events throughout the year. The average workweek ranges from 40–45 hours during the grazing season (mid-April through mid-October), with lighter winter weeks typically between 25–40 hours, depending on weather and workload.

You’ll work Saturdays at the Burlington Farmers Market and occasionally Sundays for burger events, with two consecutive weekdays off. However, when Steve is away and no other employees are available, you may be responsible for chores up to 7 days a week. Those additional two days per week usually require only 1–2 hours of chores (depending on season), but you will be the primary decision-maker and point of contact for the farm during those rare periods.

Even on lighter winter weeks, you are considered on-call during your five assigned workdays. If an issue arises—like a broken waterer or livestock emergency—you’re expected to return to the farm to resolve it, typically any time before 5:30 PM, unless you’ve scheduled paid time off (PTO) in advance.

Key Responsibilities

Grazing Season (Mid-April – Mid-October)

  • Assist in Cattle Management: Assist with daily pasture rotations for a 75-head Angus herd; support winter hay feeding and infrastructure work as needed. Experience with livestock handling is preferred, but we will train motivated, long-term candidates.

  • Lead The Pastured Poultry Program

  • Meat Chickens: Raise ~800 broilers per season. Tasks include feeding, watering, daily pasture moves, and coordinating seven on-farm processing days.

  • Layer Hens: Care for ~150 hens including feeding, egg collection, washing, packing, and mobile coop management.

  • Farm Stores: Maintain our Charlotte and Hinesburg self-serve stores: restocking, signage, cleanliness, and basic inventory.

  • Farmers Market: Lead our Saturday booth at the Burlington Farmers Market—set-up, cooking burgers, managing staff and customer experience.

  • Events: Support burger pop-ups and multiple annual on-farm events, helping with prep, logistics, and guest experience.

  • Infrastructure & Maintenance: Assist with mowing, fencing, small construction projects, pasture water systems, and other seasonal upkeep.

  • Enterprise Development: Collaborate with Steve on future enterprises including pork, lamb, and agritourism (e.g. goat cuddling, pumpkin patches).

Winter Season (Mid-October – Mid-April)

  • Livestock: Feed round bales to cattle, maintain layer hen systems.

  • Farm Stores: Keep stores clean, stocked, and accessible (including snow removal with shovel).

  • Farmers Market: Staff and attend winter market Saturdays, (every other Saturday with some breaks here and there)

  • Projects: Contribute to seasonal maintenance, construction, and special projects.

Compensation & Benefits

Salary: $40,000–$48,000/year (based on experience)
Higher pay is considered for candidates with experience in livestock handling, poultry operations, fencing, pasture water systems, tractor use, construction, retail, or events.

  • 3 weeks paid vacation (with the expectation of completing essential chores on most holidays)

  • $250/month farm store credit

  • Tip share from the farmers market burger booth

  • Workers Compensation insurance

  • Paid sick time (1 hour earned per 52 hours worked, up to 40 hours/year)

  • Annual bonus potential (up to 3% of salary)

  • Year-round trailer or tiny home hookup available on-site

Grazing Season Assistant Farm Manager (May–October)

Full-Time | $17–21/hr + $250 in Meat & Eggs + Workers Comp
Seasonal role for someone looking to go all-in from spring through fall — without a year-round commitment.

Looking for a seasonal job that’s outdoors, hands-on, and wildly rewarding? Want to skip the office and spend your days in the pasture with animals, good people, and real food? We’re hiring a Grazing Season Assistant Farm Manager to help lead our daily operations during the peak season at both our Charlotte and Hinesburg Farms.

This role is perfect for someone who loves being outside, enjoys fast-paced days, and wants to build or apply farm skills during Vermont’s most vibrant season — without committing to the winter.

What You'll Do:

You’ll be deeply involved in all aspects of seasonal farm life — from chicken chores to Saturday burger slinging at the Burlington Farmers Market. You’ll work closely with Steve (the farmer/founder) and help lead our part-time team across a mix of rotating responsibilities.

1. Livestock & Grazing

  • Assist with rotational grazing of our 75-head Angus herd — daily moves, fencing, water, and hay in shoulder seasons.

  • Cattle experience = awesome. No experience = no problem. We’ll train you to be a confident cowhand.

2. Pasture-Raised Poultry

  • Meat Chickens: Primary caretaker for ~800 broilers. Move tractors daily, manage feed/water, and help on processing days.

  • Layer Hens: Oversee ~150 hens. Feed, collect eggs, wash, carton, and keep their mobile coops in top shape.

3. Farmers Markets

  • Help run our booth at the Burlington Farmers Market every Saturday.

  • Coordinate burger service, staff, set-up/breakdown, and keep the flow fun and fast.

4. Farm Stores

  • Keep our Charlotte and Hinesburg farm stores clean, stocked, and welcoming.

  • Update signs, track inventory, and (bonus) use your best handwriting to make things look sharp.

5. Events & Hospitality

  • Help manage logistics for Sunday burger pop-ups at Red Wagon Plants.

  • Support a handful of on-farm dinners and events through the season (food, music, guests — it’s a vibe).

6. General Farm Work

  • Mow, paint, build things, fix stuff, and help keep the farm running and beautiful.

  • Be ready to step in wherever needed. No two days are the same.

What We're Looking For:

  • You’re not afraid to get dirty, get sweaty, and hustle.

  • You're a team player who can take initiative and work independently.

  • Bonus if you’ve got any of the following:

    • Pastured livestock or poultry experience

    • Tractor operation know-how

    • Farmers market or food service experience

    • Handy with tools, mowing, or light construction

Compensation & Perks:

  • $17–21/hour starting, based on experience and what level of expertise you’re bringing to the farm

  • $200/month in grass-fed beef

  • Workers comp coverage

  • No winter commitment — take the winter off to ski!

Farmers Market Manager (Burlington, VT)

Part-Time | $21/hr + Tips | Free Burgers + Beef Perks
May–October, with Winter Market option

Do you thrive in a fast-paced, high-energy environment? Love great food, friendly people, and sunny Saturdays? Join us at one of Vermont’s busiest and most iconic outdoor gatherings — the Burlington Farmers Market — and become a key part of the Grass Cattle Co. crew.

We’re a small, hardworking farm team selling 100% grass-fed beef and pasture-raised burgers directly to our community, and we’re looking for a fun, capable, organized person to manage our Farmers Market operation every Saturday, May through October (with the option to keep going into our every-other-week winter market).

What You'll Do:

  • Be the Lead of the market booth. You’ll help manage both our tents:

    • Tent 1: Grass-fed meat sales from our mobile freezer — learn the ropes alongside Steve (the farmer/founder).

    • Tent 2: Burger station — manage a rotating 2-person grill team (you’re one of them!), keep things flowing, and help serve our die-hard burger fans.

  • Crew coordination: You’ll be in charge of scheduling burger staff from our reliable, friendly team of 10+ folks with varying availability.

  • Load in + Load out: Meet Steve at the farm at 7am for pack-up, or roll into the market at 7:45am ready to set up. Market ends at 2pm.

  • Systems + Efficiency: Help us get better. Improve our market flow, streamline prep, and make it even more fun and functional for our staff and customers.

  • Optional Expansion: If you’re loving it and want more hours, we’d love to have you help at other markets (Stowe, Montpelier, Winooski, Shelburne, etc.) — mostly meat sales, but burgers could be on the table too. Company vehicle provided.

We’re Looking For:

  • Experience in food service, farming, or meat sales = awesome, but not required. We’ll train the right person.

  • Strong leadership + good vibes — you know how to stay organized and keep people smiling under pressure.

  • Someone who enjoys early mornings, teamwork, and being in the middle of a vibrant local scene.

  • Bonus points if you nerd out about sustainable food, regenerative farming, or just love a good burger.

Comensation & Benifits:

  • $21/hour starting wage

  • 50% share of all market tips

  • All-you-can-eat burgers (Yes, really)

  • $100/month in grass-fed beef (retail value)

  • Flexible growth potential with expanded market options
